About Sex Offender Registration in Atlanta

Georgia law is specific about sex offender registration. Sex offender registration will be required for a person who has been convicted of a sexually violent offense, dangerous sexual offense, or sex crime against a minor. It will also be required for a sex offender who resides in another state and is moving to Georgia on a temporary or permanent basis. Upon release from imprisonment, the offender will need to register with the sheriff of the county in which he or she resides within 72 hours of his or her release. Following are the additional requirements of sex offender registration in Georgia:

  • Re-register with the sheriff's office within 72 hours of the offender's birthday, every year.
  • Update registration information with the sheriff within 72 hours of a change of address.
  • Pay the sheriff's office an annual registration fee of $250.
  • Continue to comply with registration and re-registration requirements for life.
  • (Electronic monitoring may also be required as part of sex offender registration, depending on the case.)
  • A failure to register as a sex offender is a felony offense in Georgia, punishable by 10 to 30 years in prison for a first offense and up to life in prison for a second conviction.

In each county of Georgia, the sheriff's office will prepare and maintain a list of sexual offenders and sexually dangerous predators. This list will include each offender's name, age, physical description, photograph, crime for which he or she was convicted, and risk classification. These lists are available for the public to view at any sheriff's office, at any county administrative building, on a website maintained by the sheriff's office, in the main administrative building for any municipal corporation, and in the office of the clerk of the superior court.
